A note from the desk of Mrs. Carissa Allred:
I would like to thank everyone who participated in the fundraiser for the 8th-grade Washington D.C. trip. My students worked extremely hard to offset the cost of this trip, and our community stepped up and supported them. Without your help, the students would not have been able to raise $5,000. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart!

Take a look at the hands-on work of Mr. Bilbrey's 3rd-period Advanced Tech Theater Makeup Class. Proof that learning can be fun! Don't forget, the fall play opens tomorrow evening. Make your plans to come out to support the drama program!

With respect and gratitude from the students and staff of Jay County Jr.-Sr. High.

These students have been working hard in Mr. Bilbrey's Scenic Design 1 class to prepare for the Drama Club's fall play, Alice in Wonderland: Down the Rabbit Hole. Show dates are November 15, 16, and 17! Don't miss it!

Mr. Keller's calculus students recently completed an activity to discover just how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. Students collected their own data and then used Desmos.com to find the line of best fit. Then students used related rates and derivatives to find the specific number of licks it takes. How many licks do you think it takes?!

We are so proud of how the staff and students of Jay County Jr.-Sr. High have rallied in response to the challenges created by the September tornado. It's a testament to the character, positivity, and resilience of everyone affected, especially the teachers, faculty, and students who were displaced. Our library (IMC-Instructional Media Center) suffered devastating damage, but Mrs. Fugiett and Mrs. Harris have done a wonderful job with their relocation. Students are able to check out books and utilize many of the same services.

Important information!

Happy Halloween! Here's a fitting report from a junior high class:
Mrs. Wright's 6th-period science class recently had a gourd-geous adventure exploring the fascinating world of pumpkin anatomy. The lesson included dissecting pumpkins, identifying parts, and unleashing a volcanic eruption!!

Thank you to our community for coming out to support the National Honor Society's Trunk-or-Treat event last evening. We had beautiful weather and an amazing turnout. Thank you to our 25 participating trunk-or-treat organizations/businesses. This event would not have been possible without you. Have a happy Halloween and enjoy some photos from this event!

Last week, students in Mr. Krieg's graphic design program toured EP Graphics in Berne. They learned about the production process and the products produced. Students enjoyed learning about this nearby company. A big thanks to EP Graphics for welcoming our students!

One more reason we are fortunate to be part of the Jay County community -- For the past two years, FCC has graciously donated money to help 8th-grade students with the cost of the Washington, D.C. trip. This year, FCC has given four students $200 each to be applied to their overall cost. Recipients had to be in good academic and behavioral standing for this school year. The four lucky winners were Angel Navarro-Garcia, Kaidah Cross, Izzy Huelskamp, and Jaylee Twigg. Congratulations to these students and sincere thanks to FCC!

We are thrilled to announce that because of a generous donation from an anonymous community member, two of our 8th-grade students have been given the opportunity to participate in the 8th-grade Washington D.C. trip at no cost to them or their families. Several weeks ago, a Jay County resident contacted Mrs. Allred with an offer to provide scholarships to two 8th-grade students for 100% of the cost of the annual Washington, D.C. trip. To earn one of the scholarships, students were asked to write a paragraph about what it would mean to them to receive the award to ensure that they could visit Washington, D.C. Participating students also needed to have good academic and behavioral standing for this school year. The donor then chose the two winners from the 15 applicants. We are proud to announce and congratulate the winners, Brayden Tobe and Annisyn Gundrum, and of course, offer our sincere thanks to the generous donor!

Jay County High School's National Honor Society chapter is hosting a trunk or treat event. Everyone is invited to visit the various participating student organizations and community members for some Halloween fun. Any local business or organization interested in joining the event should email Olivia Dues at odues@jayschools.k12.in.us to get signed up.

Members of the drama club have been busy rehearsing for their upcoming production of Alice in Wonderland: Down the Rabbit Hole. The play will open on November 15 at 7 pm with two additional performances--November 16 at 7 pm and November 17 at 2 pm. The admission price is 5.00 per person. Make your plans to come out to enjoy the show and support these young men and women!

One of Ms. Day's Principles of Business Management classes worked on communication skills by participating in a group drawing activity. The goal was to use effective communication strategies in order to control the marker as a team. The groups were tasked with drawing a smiley face, a tree, a house, and the word Friday. For their final task, they were instructed to draw something to impress. The class then voted on the best drawing. The winning group drew Artie the Artichoke, the mascot from Scottsdale Community College.

Spooky good job to Mrs. Wright's second-period students, who conjured up some serious creativity to finish up their writing project "Haunted House For Sale" just in time for Fall break!

Parent/teacher conferences for the first semester are being held this Wednesday (10/23) from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm in the high school commons area. Parents and guardians may pick up grades for the first 9-week period and speak with teachers. There will also be a financial aid workshop for seniors and their families at 6:00 in the auditorium. We hope to have a great turnout!

Students in Mr. McFarland’s EMT class took advantage of the PSAT testing day release time for seniors last Wednesday to learn about emergency resources in the community. They were able to get up close and personal with Lutheran Air 1 at the Portland airport. They also discussed the newly emerging partnership between the ambulance service and the health department to work on prevention strategies to help keep patients out of the Emergency Department. After an awesome lunch served by the Portland Fire Department, the students toured the facility and then finished their day at the Jay County Security Center where Sheriff Newton discussed safety and mapping their future wisely. The students walked away with a new-found respect for the overwhelming amount of available emergency resources, including emergency management and 911 dispatch.

Jay County Jr.-Sr. High School's German Club held its annual Oktoberfest on Tuesday evening, October 8, 2024. For the last 25+ years, the German Club has been serving German specialties such as Fisher Brats with sauerkraut, German potato salad, Spätzle noodles, Black Forest cake, cheesecake, and apple strudel. This year's Oktoberfest had a nice turnout of students and guests alike.
